Because the best people who can help have been there themselves

Peer Worker Training - Valuing Life Experience

We made a promise to people on low incomes: We see you. We hear you. We are you. (Read more here.)

The best experts who can help people in hardship are those who have lived this experience for themselves. Our ELE-Ments programme, (or Elements), recruits, trains, employs and mentors people who are Experts through their Lived Experience. Peer workers have been a core part of our team since Clean Slate was established in 2006.

What is ELE-Ments?

The Elements programme offers a 12 week placement, including at least half a day's paid work each week. Jobseekers who have come through our money coaching or employment support can join the programme as a Peer Worker. (A Peer Worker is someone who uses their own experience to help others going through similar things.)

The placements are designed to fit in around other commitments. They are hosted by Clean Slate, and sometimes other support services, receiving mentorship from Quids in! Coaches at Clean Slate.

Could you be a Peer Worker?

Many of our money coaches started out as clients who needed support with money or finding work. If you'd like paid work experience, alongside friendly support and training, then Elements is for you!

What Peer Workers do:
  • Attend training to learn the skills to be a good Peer Worker
  • Provide a friendly welcome to people attending our walk-in spaces
  • Provide information about what we do and arrange meeting times
  • Help people find information that could help them with money, jobs or getting online
  • Support Quids in! Coaches to provide local support services
  • Supporting tutors running group events
  • Going to events with staff to promote the service

Employment
  • Clean Slate is a Living Wage employer
  • The Elements programme maps to a Traineeship and so we pay the national minimum wage while Peer Workers are on the programme and attending training
  • An automatic interview scheme means all completers of the Elements programme will be considered for any money coaching vacancies we advertise
  • We currently offer a rolling recruitment, which means you can apply at any time to join the next Elements programme. We will let you know if there is a waiting list
  • A short video below describes the role and you can click here to see a written role description

Peer Worker Stories

After the programme, you will have many new skills and our Peers often feed back how proud they feel and how far they've come. At this point, we can support you to update your CV and apply for work that you feel motivated by. If you'd like to find out more, have a look at our video below or get in touch with our teams.
So what is it really like being a Peer Worker? Have a look at Liudmyla, Petya and Mark's story. Click here to visit our Voices page.

Could your organisation be an Elements host?

Does your organisation think people with lived experience could help engage more people from your local community? Would their understanding of your purpose add something to how you deliver services? Why not consider becoming an Elements Host? More here.
